The Potato Fair is held every year in Cella during the second weekend of September. After a break of a few years, it was celebrates again from the year 2000. Since then a party has been recovered in which this tuber is the main protagonist. Cella’s potato has always been of high quality, although in recent years its production in the municipality has decreased notably. For this reason, the City Council organizes this Fair every year in which it bets on the potato and its culinary uses with a festive weekend full of popular events.
The fair opens on Saturday morning, and after visiting the many stands that are placed in the area to sell a multitude of things, there is a presentation by the residents of the town of dishes made in their homes, whose main ingredient is potato. On Saturday afternoon, a “morra” contest is organized for fans of this traditional game and many people gather in the municipal swimming pools to peel, wash and cut the potatoes that will be used the next day in the preparation of popular food.
As many volunteers also gather in the Cañamera ship to prepare more than 400 potato omelettes to make more than 1.700 sandwiches that are distributed free at night for dinner among all attendees.
On Sunday morning the volunteers gather to make the popular meal, more than 4000 servings of stew made from potatoes, bull meat, snails, mushrooms and many other ingredients.
Sunday morning is enlivened by the local jota group “Fuente de Cella”, who take a walk around the place and encourage those who attend the fair.
After the popular meal, also free, the traditional “guiñote” championship is organized.
In addition, throughout the weekend toy can enjoy children’s games, musical performances, etc.
The potato fair is an example of how, thanks to the voluntary participation of Cella’sneighbours, a party can be achieved that every year pleases and surprises both the residents and the tourists who visit it.
